One of the things that shocked me about the way this book was received, were the many letters I had from men saying ‘you have written my mother exactly’ – shocked because I invented a mother for Patrick just about believably this side of hell…  Critics put me into ecstasy by suggesting that ‘there has always been a touch of Alan Bennett about Mavis Cheek…’  No greater praise

‘Her warm, confiding tone conjures up a country kitchen and a long, empty afternoon.’ Guardian

‘There has always been a touch of the Alan Bennett about Mavis Cheek. Both writers share an uncanny talent for capturing the cadences of the way we speak, and for re-creating them on the page so delicately and with such charm that it takes your breath away.’ Daily Mail|

‘Cheek is a witty, original writer.’ Sunday Telegraph

‘Mavis Cheek may well be the spokes-woman for a generation.’ Observer

‘Cheek has an excellent eye for detail.’ Daily Express
