Mrs Fytton’s Country Life
Purchase Title ›
This book was bought in thousands, it’s one of my most popular, and it gave me the most grief to write. But I was really proud of it when it was finished. I had something quite wise to say in amongst all the humour and goings on. Like how much women have lost over the centuries in terms of their status and their livelihoods. It was an education to me when I researched it, and it seems from the letters if get, it was an education for quite a few readers, too.
Angela Fytton – wonderwife, supermother, bedroom vamp and business partner – has been unceremoniously dumped. Like many a good wife before her she has been swapped by her husband for a younger model. One day, she knows, her husband will return. Meanwhile she yields herself up to the notion that country life is pure and good and that country people are next to angels – but on moving to her country idyll, she discovers this is very far from the truth.
‘Marvellously entertaining…Cheek’s writing is infused with terrific comic energy and she possesses the wickedly sharp eye of a born satirist.’ Mail on Sunday
‘The funniest and most beguiling townie-goes-to-the-country novel since Cold Comfort Farm.’ Daily Telegraph
‘[A] lusty portrait of village life and plenty of good jokes.’ Independent
‘With an unerring instinct Cheek gives the reader all the ingredients for a modern-day story of manners.’ Guardian
